I just watched this lovely movie yesterday. For some or other reason I didn’t expect much. But Things We Lost in the Fire surprised me. It is a warm and excellent movie.
The story is about
Audrey Burke (played by Halle Berry) and her warm and loving husband Brian (David Duchovny). They have been happily married 11 years, and have two children: 10-year-old daughter Harper (Alexis Llewellyn) and 6-year-old son Dory (Micah Berry). Brian’s closest friend since childhood is a somewhat hopeless case – Jerry Sunborne (Benicio del Toro) is a heroin addict.
Then something tragic happens. Brian is killed in an attempt to defend a woman who was being beaten by her husband. On the day of the funeral Audrey realizes that she has forgotten to inform Jerry of Brian’s death, and sends her brother to pick him up.
At this point the movie could turn into a crime fiction, where investigation of the murder and revenge was focused. But it doesn’t. Cleverly, the movie instead deals with how the little family and the best friend cope with the tragic loss. And from this point in, the movie is just wonderful and very charming.
Directed by the talented Danish director Susanne Bier (Brothers), the story is allowed to unfold almost in real time as grief washes over the family. Audrey invites Jerry to move into the room adjacent to their garage, which he does. During his stay at the Burke home Jerry struggles to remain drug-free and also becomes very fond of Harper and Dory. The relationship between Jerry and Audrey is fragile and complicated.
The acting in Things We Lost in the Fire was superb. I’ve never seen Halle Berry better than this – a very memorable performance. And as always David Duchovny did a great job. But the one I was the most impressed with was Benicio del Toro. He was 100 per cent perfect in this role, and played magnificent. This is a wonderful movie with lots of quiet sensitivity which I strongly recommend!
