Philip A. Yaffe has been a
feature writer with the Wall Street Journal and a marketing communication consultant. He currently teaches writing and public speaking in Brussels, Belgium, where he lives.
The Gettysburg Approach is a good book, concerned with the eternal problems of effective writing and speaking, issues which are crucial for students and professionals in a world where getting attention and keeping it is becoming more and more difficult.
According to Mr. Yaffe, professional level writing and speaking depends on a handful of easy-to-understand principles. The Gettysburg Approach goes straight to the foundations, defines these principals and explains how to apply them. Using the “simple, straight-forward” writing in Lincoln’s Gettysburg address as his stepping-off place, Yaffe begins his exploration of good prose by stating there are only two fundamental types of writing: creative and expository. This book is devoted to the latter.
Through a variety of examples and simple exercises, this excellent guide will help anyone sharpen their skills and rapidly learn to write and speak clearly, concisely, and persuasively.
The book is, of course, clear, excellently and effectively written and communicates its message very well. I liked the book a lot. I think it is a book almost anyone involved in writing and communication would benefit from reading. It is important, I think, to sometimes get some input that facilitates ponderings on how we communicate and how we can improve ourselves. This is such a book. The Gettysburg Approach to Writing and Speaking Like a Professional is a good book and a great source for self-improvement – even for people who already are professionals!
