Reckless, by Andrew Gross

Reckless is the latest page-turner Reckless, by Andrew Grossfrom Andrew Gross, an excellent writer who has published several thrillers on his own as well as five written with James Patterson. Among the five books with Patterson is the book that is my all – time favorite Patterson collaboration: The Jester.

Gross’ latest book is in the traditional thriller genre. It starts with the killing of a high- rolling stock trader who works for a giant financial corporation. The trader and his entire family are murdered in their mansion in an upscale town in Connecticut.

Initially, the police think it is a burglary. But a sharp former NYPD detective, Ty Hauck, who is involved in an investigation of an international financial figure, sees a strange link to the man he is investigating and starts to view the case differently. And as more information comes in, it becomes clear that the murder of the seemingly successful trader fits into a much larger picture: a picture which in some ways is more in line with several events in the real world – such as the alleged Goldman-Sachs scam involving synthetic sub-prime instruments – than the author may have imagined when he wrote it. There seems to be a link between the man he investigates, the murdered trader, and the sub-prime mortgage crisis.

Hauck starts to connect some dots that are pretty far between but nevertheless fit a pattern, and in doing so, glimpses a huge picture that if substantiated, will have huge consequences for people high- up in international and financial circles!

Reckless is very well plotted and written – a really entertaining book. It is a very suspenseful and smart thriller that makes you wonder – even if, like me, you do not believe in conspiracy theories – is this fiction or could it really have happened? The book is a wild ride, one very much worth taking!
